Smocked Smartphone Cozy
Research says that smartphones induce feelings of love in their owners, and nothing says love like a hand-knitted sweater.
materials:
- Worsted weight yarn
- US 5 (3.75 mm) double-point needles
pattern:
CO 32 stitches. Distribute 10 stitches needle 1, 10 stitches needle 2, 12 stitches needle 3. Join to work in round.
Bottom Ribbing: * k2, p2. Repeat from * for 3 rows.
Knit all stitches on the next row.
(The pattern staggers the ribbing at the top and bottom edges to distinguish the cuff from the smocking pattern.)
SMOCKING PATTERN:
- Row 1 – * p2, k2. Repeat from * to end.
- Row 2 – Same as Row 1.
- Row 3 – Same as Row 1.
- Row 4 – * p2, insert right hand needle between the 6th and 7th stitches on the left hand needle, loop yarn around the right hand needle and pull forward, place loop in front of the first stitch on the left hand needle, k2tog, k, p2, k2. Repeat from * to end.
- Row 5 – * p2, k2. Repeat from * to end.
- Row 6 – Same as Row 5.
- Row 7 – Same as Row 5.
- Row 8 – p2, k2. * p2, insert right hand needle between the 6th and 7th stitches on the left hand needle, loop yarn around the right hand needle and pull forward, place loop in front of the first stitch on the left hand needle, k2tog, k, p2, k2. Repeat from * through to the start of the next Row 1, to finish a full round of smocking before completing Row 1 in rib.
Complete three full cycles of the SMOCKING PATTERN.
Repeat Rows 1-7 once more.
Knit all stitches on the next row.
Top Ribbing: * k2, p2. Repeat from * for 3 rows.
BO all stitches in knit.
Finishing: Turn the cozy inside out and align the edges so that the pattern will wrap the phone the way you prefer. Then:
- With a tapestry needle, sew the bottom edge closed.
- Create a 4-inch long i-cord. Sew i-cord onto the inside of the top of the cozy as pictured.
- Sew button on opposite side.
- Weave in ends.
