Design Your Own Coasters

Or use my designs – they’re free, after all!
knitted wool coasters

materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn in at least 2 colors
  • 24 inch strand Waste Yarn
  • US 8 (5.0 mm) straight needles (I use 7 inch dpns with stoppers on the butt ends)
  • Crochet needle (if crocheting border)

pattern:

CO 36 stitches in Waste Yarn.

All Odd Rows 1-23—Follow pattern (right to left), knitting both sides simultaneously.  For every box on the pattern, you will make 2 stitches of opposite colors, as follows:

  • If box is MC, k1 in MC, move both yarns forward, p1 in CC, move both yarns backward.
  • If box is CC, k1 in CC, move both yarns forward, p1 in MC, move both yarns backward.

All Even Rows 2-24—Follow pattern (left to right), knitting both sides simultaneously, as follows:

  • If box is CC, k1 in MC, move both yarns forward, p1 in CC, move both yarns backward.
  • If box is MC, k1 in CC, move both yarns forward, p1 in MC, move both yarns backward.

Finishing: You can either do the border in the MC or CC – I used MC.  Break yarn of the color you are no longer using.

  • Top Border – Return to front and use 3-Needle Bind-Off to make your top border (ssk’ing makes the cleanest effect).
  • Left Border – Crochet (with surface slip stitch) a border (18-19 sts long) down the left side (or you can do as I do and pull yarn (back to front) through both sides of the coaster onto right needle, and then use the left needle to pull old stitch over new.)
  • Bottom Border – Remove waste yarn and place stitches on two needles.  (You’ll need to spend time stitch-by-stitch to figure out crossed yarns if your Row 1 had two different colors on one side.)  3-Needle Bind-Off as for the top row.
  • Right Border – Crochet or fake-crochet as for the left row.

Cut off yarn, and weave in ends.
